Our department once invited noted professor James Flynn to campus. Jim has made important contributions to the study of IQ, notably the observed and still debated “Flynn Effect.” And let me add that Jim Flynn is a true scholar, a gentleman, and a liberal. He never engaged in the heated rhetoric associated with IQ but instead approached those he disagreed with as colleagues who also pursued the truth.
I tried, on two occasions, to get our psychology department to attend Flynn’s talk and each time was rebuked. Only later did I understand why. However, on the day and hour of Flynn’s talk, which was held in the Admin building, someone called in a bomb threat. I’ve worked at UC for 16 years and have never experienced a bomb threat. Unshaken, Jim politely moved the discussion outside on the steps of the graduate school building and continued to discuss IQ. We had an excellent discussion and debate. JPW
